With the new state budget effective July 1, some state attractions that previously have had free admission will start charging a fee, or some will see a fee increase.  The N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer will transition to a self-funded operation beginning July 1.  The change is being made in light of current economic conditions combined with the viability of this State Historic Site to generate revenues needed to operate.  At the N.C. Zoo in Asheboro, for the first time in a decade, admission prices will rise $2 in each of the park’s three ticket categories.  Tryon Palace in New Bern saw a $1million budget cut that will likely result in charges for some attractions that had been free, but will not be required to become fully self-funded.  The budget also requires tolls on all state-operated ferries except for two routes:  between Hatteras and Ocracoke islands, and between Knotts Island and mainland Currituck County.
