This park was the third stop on my world wind tour of Disney's fabulous theme parks in the Orlando area of Central Florida -- my home State. I have previously visited and reported on my visits to the Magic Kingdom and Epcot and have reviewed the Mystic Dunes in Celebration, Fl., and the Holiday Inn in Lake Buena Vista (future edition).
As I mentioned in my Magic
Kingdom piece I have been coming to this area of Central Florida
since the early 1970's when most of what is here today was part of swamp
land and miles and miles of orange groves. I liken what happened here with the
spectacular emergence and growth of the Las Vegas area of Nevada which
was mostly desert land until mobster Bugsy Siegel -- like Walt Disney --
had a vision in 1946 when he opened the swank Flamingo hotel and
gaming resort.
My visit to Disney's Animal Kingdom was much anticipated
as I have been a fan of wild beasts since studying them as a kid via the World
Book Encyclopedia. Thanks to the publishers of that great source of
knowledge I was able identify a wide variety of birds, butterflies, dogs, cats,
mammals, reptiles, and even pre-historic animals such as my favorite Sabre
Toothed Tiger and Woolly Mammoth.
One day those creatures of our
past will once again be on display somewhere in the United States and
other parts of the world due to the phenomenon known as gene splicing. I just
hope that scientists prepare adequate facilities to contain and protect us from
them escaping like in the movie Jurassic Park (1993).My adventurous day began by waking up early enough to catch the free Disney shuttle from the Holiday Inn in Lake Buena Vista which was due at 8 A.M. (EST). I am glad that I got off to an earlier start because it arrived 20 minutes early at 7:40 A.M. causing me to break out in a slow trot to the front of the hotel.
The driver --
a nice older guy -- admitted that he was early and that he was due to depart
promptly at eight as scheduled; after forcing me to get in some early morning P.T.
(physical training). His bus was the older-type metro model that leaked water
inside and was rather warm. It was owned by a private company and not Disney.
