I have been patronizing this eatery for three decades now and that is the reason why I just cannot get used to calling it by its new name which is Oakhurst Grill. For some reason, then unknown to me, they (the owners) all of a sudden changed (in 2007) the name of this original Mr. C′s which was founded in 1967 by Mr. George Couchell who is also the founder (early 1980′s) of the relatively new Showmars chain of 20+ area eateries. His dad (Johnny) is the founder of the former Johnny′s Grill -- now Gus′ Sir Beef located next door. I would also occasionally visit the Beatties Ford Road location of Mr. C′s when I happened to be on that side of town. There now sits a Family Dollar Store at the corner of Lasalle Street and Beatties Ford Road. Now, the only Mr. C′s standing is located off Highway 29 North just south of Interstate 85 in Concord, North Carolina. I occasionally visit that location when I am heading north of the Queen City.

I really get a kick out of visiting this location because it is one of the first restaurants that I frequented after moving to Charlotte back in 1985. In fact, I literally witnessed the male co-owner′s hair turn from dark brunette to almost all grey. My, I say to myself, he is surely getting old. Smile! The husband and wife that run -- or used to run --this place have consistently been nice to me and all the other regulars on each and every visit over the last 30 years. I find that amazing because most of us typically have at least one bad day on a monthly basis.

Located just up the street from here is the old Independence (now Bojangles′) Arena which is situated within walking distance from my old abode (Apartment); the famous -- sometimes not so famous -- Doral Apartments which used to be all adult back in the day. Yes, no rug rats/kids allowed. Someone with a whole bunch of kids must have complained and now those type (all adult) apartments are actually illegal today I am told. Shucks! Right across from the Doral used to be the Cavalier Apartments which were typically smaller and less costly. Separating the two (same owner) complexes is the sometimes infamous Briar Creek which is well known for flooding over the years. In fact, it made the national news back in 2008 when the Red Cross had to dispatch boats to rescue some of the tenants after major flooding. I had long since moved away but knew a few folks still living there. Today, all of the Cavalier units have been demolished and some of the Doral units, along the creek, are gone as well including my old apartment. I remember being alerted by my then neighbor to check on my ride because it was being swallowed by raging water because I parked directly over one of the storm drains. There was flood water all the way up to the door of my kool jet black Nissan 200SX with flip up headlights, pewter grey interior, and all electric everything!

Back to the matter at hand; why it has taken me so long to review this place is still a mystery to me. I guess I have taken it for granted that you guys all knew about this place. Right? Well, with so many chain eateries moving in I doubt that you Queen City newbies are even familiar with this old side of town -- the east side -- except when passing through to Uptown from Matthews or Indian Trail. Anyhow, it was Friday and I needed some fish and since I was heading to Matthews (smile) I decided to stop by for the umpteenth time. This place is takeout only so I ordered from the counter my favorite Flounder Plate with collard greens and potato salad on the side.

The waiting area was clean as usual and filled with pictures and portraits of Greek life. The counter person was friendly as usual and my order was up in about the standard 10-minute wait time. My total bill came to $19.00 for two dinner plates which may be considered on the high side but well worth the price. The Flounder was again the best that I have had in the Carolinas (North and South); lightly breaded, a sweet after taste, and fried to perfection. The greens were again above average; not too stiff or too soft/mushy, however, could have used a bit more seasoning. The hushpuppies were excellent, as usual; sweet, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The potato salad was okay as rated according to my very high standards, and the tartar sauce homemade and the bomb (great).

Again, I have no idea of why it has taken me so long to review one of my absolute favorite eateries in the Queen City but now I can finally cross this one off my bucket list. I hope you stop in soon and enjoy it just the same.

The Oakhurst Grill (Old original Mr. C′s) is located at 4111 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC, 28205, in east Charlotte near the corner of Eastway Drive/Wendover Road. Their web site is www.oakhurstgrill.com, and phone number 704-375-6683. Tell them that Trend Magazine Onlinetm sent you!
