A Great Experience!

The Smoke Pit Concord NC Review Pic

I discovered this eatery while engaged in contract transportation services for Queen City Tours™ and Travel in the Concord, NC, area which is a sleepy town just North and adjacent to the Queen City. I did not think that much about this jewel until a second person mentioned that it was good eating. It was then that I decided to place it on my list for a stop through the next time that I was in the area.

The Smoke Pit Concord NC Review Pic This place is located just north of the most popular attraction in Cabarrus County which includes the cities of Concord, Harrisburg, Kannapolis, Midland, and Mount Pleasant. The Charlotte Motor Speedway is home to two major races on the NASCAR circuit; the Coca-Cola 600 every May, and BOA 500 every October. Each race draws thousands of race fans from around the U.S. and as far away as Australia. My company has been providing safe rides to and from the track since 2004 via our QCT Charlotte NASCAR Shuttle™.

The City of Concord was once only known for textile manufacturing but today is also home to Concord Mills Mall; the largest shopping venue in North and South Carolina, the Great Wolf Lodge indoor water park, and the ZMax drag racing track as well as several racing museums making it a mini tourist destination.

Back to the matter at hand; I finally got a chance to stop through this eatery on a Saturday evening after several missed attempts due to their hours (closes at 8 pm) and days open (Monday thru Saturday). They had plenty of parking in front and in the back for overflows. Their interior was ranch-style and needed a little attention in terms of a few napkins on the floor. They provide 4-8 person tables, basic furniture, with plastic table cloths.

The house was full when I arrived at 10 til 7 PM and I was impressed at their 98.5 sanitation rating. It was a short wait (less than 5 minutes) before I could order a take out from the very friendly cashier. I ordered their four bones pork rib plate with BBQ baked beans, french fries, and cornbread; which totaled $14.93 w/taxes. I consider this a bit on the pricey side; however, I was elated after the cashier asked if I wanted a drink while waiting, then handed me a cup and pointed me in the direction of the machine.

While awaiting my order I decided to check out the men's restroom which was relatively clean; however, trash needed to be emptied. My order was up in about six minutes, which is super fast considering the crowd picked up after I place my order. Their to-go packaging was awesome and unique and included a covered aluminum tray (that I re-used for baking), and a shopping bag to carry everything. They added a few pickles and onions on the side of my meal -- a nice touch. Their baked beans were above average in terms of taste and came with slivers of shredded pork, and a grilled smoked flavor. Their fries were nice and crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and larger than typical. Their cornbread was lightly baked, had a good yellow color, moist, and was not too sweet or plain. Finally, I received a huge slab of pork ribs (wet) that had a great smoked flavor and aroma, and were tender.

I must admit that when someone brags about an eatery I am typically skeptical because my taste is usually a bit more discriminating. In this case, I agree 100% with the multiple great reports that I received about this place in the sleepy town of Concord. In fact, I am already planning on a return trip as soon as I find myself in that area during eating hours. My only major complaint is that they should extend their hours until at least 10 PM, and operate on Sundays.
