The Historic Excelsior Club
One of The South's Oldest Black-Owned Social and Night Clubs

The Historic Excelsior Club was founded in 1944 by Mr. James Robert "Jimmie" Mckee (1913-1985). Mr. Mckee started the Excelsior Club because he wanted Black professionals to have a common place to meet and socialize. For many years, the Excelsior Club was the largest and leading private social club for Black professionals in the Southeast. Additionally, it served as a major political focal point for many past political candidates (Black and white).
The Excelsior Club also doubled as a popular nightspot for Charlotte's Black elite, and in it's hay-day attracted such world-renowned entertainers as the late Nat King Cole. The Excelsior Club was originally a house built in the 1910s and took on it's present appearance in the early 1950s The Excelsior Club was designated a local historical landmark in 1985.

Note:Washington Heights was the first streetcar suburb in Charlotte that was designed and built for and by African-Americans.
